Physical Education

Instilling habits and values that will foster a healthy lifestyle for life: All students at Bay Ridge Catholic Academy from 3K through Eighth grade are given equal time and opportunity to have access to physical education classes. Each student gets one 50-minute class per week where they learn and hone skills that have to do with the body and mind. At Bay Ridge Catholic, we encourage students to live the message of Christ through kindness, compassion and the core values of sportsmanship which align with our Christian values. 

Physical Education goals and standards for each student change as they mature and move through the school. While we use games and activities that are fun and enjoyable, each class is grounded in not only physical development, but also social and emotional development aligned with New York State’s next generation physical education standards.. Below are the standards and goals each student is held to: 

3K, Pre-K, & Kindergarten: 

  • Focus on gross motor skills such as balance, hand eye coordination, and basic body movements such as running and jumping. 
  • Learning to play with others. 
  • Learning to follow directions. 
  • Providing a base knowledge of their body parts and physical health. 

1st Grade-4th Grade: 

  • Continued improvement of all gross motor skills. 
  • Beginning to teach them about different areas of the body and how to keep them healthy (Cardio health, muscular strength)
    Developing the basic skills in sports. 
  • Cultivating skill sets such as teamwork and leadership. 
  • Introduce the food pyramid and provide a base knowledge of nutrition.

5th Grade-8th Grade:

  • Learning the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a healthy level of physical fitness. 
  • Playing sports in an organized manner. 
  • Further developing leadership, sportsmanship, and teamwork skills. 
  • Delve deeper into the topic of nutrition by learning topics like calories, diet, and what goes into a healthy body. 

Every student at Bay Ridge Catholic has the opportunity to excel in Physical Education class. For those students who have the ability to go above and beyond the classroom, the parishes of Saint Anselm and Our Lady of Angels provide a wide variety of sports opportunities through the CYO organization.
